Coach Nana explains the Cover 1 defense, a basic man coverage where the number 'one' indicates one deep defender. The free safety serves as this single deep defender, leaving the rest of the defensive backs to play man-to-man coverage. In this scheme, corners typically cover the number one receiver, while a strong safety or outside linebacker would cover a slot receiver. The free safety is completely free, staying over the top to assist wherever needed. For the linebackers, their assignment can either be man-to-man, where one takes the running back and another takes the quarterback in case they run, or, as Coach Nana prefers, "first man out". "First man out" means if the running back flares out on a route, a linebacker would take them.
