While the clamshell is a well-known exercise, the DNS star is presented as a better, though less known, alternative that activates more muscles across the body. To perform the DNS star, begin in the same position as the clamshell, using only body weight. You will lift yourself up so your butt never touches the floor, maintaining a plank-like position under constant tension. Unlike the clamshell, which primarily activates the glute medius, the DNS star also engages the QL and side abdominals. The dynamic movement involves driving your top leg back as far as possible and simultaneously reaching across with your top arm to feel a stretch in your abdominals. This exercise is a great tool to activate multiple areas at once, making it suitable for a warm-up or as an accessory to main lifts.
